A Master of Taste
by Randy Lankford Standing in the pouring rain with a soggy fish sandwich in one hand, Don Moye had a choice to make. One of his colleagues was urging the 78-year-old Moye to go home and get out of those wet clothes. Another was suggesting a nightcap. Moye opted for the nightcap. He had good reason to have a drink. It was a Friday night, he’d been under the gun all week and now a year’s worth of work was literally flowing down the Sunken Garden Theater’s storm drains. A Taste Of New Orleans, the San Antonio Zulu Association’s largest event of the year, was being hit hard by spring rains and all Moye could do was watch and wonder if the fundraiser he helped establish 25 years ago was going to be washed out.
The Zulu Association grew out of a loosely organized group of men who convened every Fourth of July to raise money for various charitable projects. They called themselves the Friendship Group and rotated between Houston, San Antonio, Memphis and New Orleans. The group put down roots in San Antonio in 1978 when it was chartered by the state of Texas as the Zulu Association of San Antonio (ZASA) and given a 501(c) (3) non-profit designation. Times were hard for the fledgling organization. “We started out doing a Juneteenth celebration,” Moye recalls. “It was over by Lackland. And some other groups in the city started holding Juneteenth celebrations too and since we were way over on the west side of town people were going to the ones closer to them. We were struggling.” ZASA became a part of the official Fiesta celebration in 1982, hosting what was called Fiesta West in Rosedale Park. It wasn’t as successful as Moye and the other founders had hoped. “We were there two years and lost all our money. We didn’t have any underwriting from the Fiesta Commission so the only money we had was what we raised at the Juneteenth event and money from our own pockets in the form of dues and donations. “We’d never had a big crowd and now we’d lost all our money, so I was scouting around searching for a new place and I came up with St. Paul’s Square in 1985. That’s when it became A Taste Of New Orleans.” The mix of music and food was an instant hit and the event outgrew St. Paul’s Square after only four years. “We only charged a dollar to get in that first year and our set designer, John Witherspoon, said we needed to charge more money. So the second year we charged two dollars. He just laughed and said he didn’t mean just another dollar.” One reason for the move to Sunken Gardens was the addition of entertainment for children who weren’t interested in the Cajun food or the musical acts attracting their parents. “Walking around one year, I noticed there were some kids crying and fussing and their parents were taking them home. So I developed the philosophy, ‘Happy kids make happy parents.’ “If the kids are bored and screaming then their parents are going to take them home and we’re not going to make any money; so it’s important to keep the kids happy so their parents will be happy because happy parents buy beer, sodas and food. So we put in some little amusements for the little kids. Over the years we’ve added some other attractions for the older kids.” Moye, a U.S. Air Force retiree, says he inherited that good sense, along with his sense of service to the community from his mother, Bernice Jackson. “If she wasn’t involved in some organization then she was leading her own troops. “It goes back to when we were doing the Juneteenth thing. When we started the Zulu Association we were working in a neighborhood that had some people who were in great need. We weren’t making much money over there but we were able to put smoke alarms in the homes of a lot of seniors over in that area, off Acme Road. “And then we put deadbolt locks on their doors. One lady had been ripped off by a roofer and she helped us back then by preparing some of our food. And we said, ‘we can’t let her be out in the rain.’ So we helped pay to complete her roof repairs. “I feel like I’ve created something. I have a real love for it. I get harried and we’re struggling all the time to get as much exposure as we can, but then, after all the bills are paid, to be able to distribute what we have left to agencies that either don’t get other assistance or maybe don’t get enough, that’s a very good thing.” A very good thing no amount of rain can dampen. |
