Inside the park that bears her name sits a 16-year-old girl with a story that’s touching the world. A story that fills children with joy and adults with wonder. A story that moves many to tears.

Morgan Hartman is soaring on a swing, hair blowing in the wind, a smile stretching across her face that this 25-acre dream cannot contain. She revels in the cool, breezy moment, unaware that the kindness of her heart inspired the place known as Morgan’s Wonderland. As her mother pushes her high beneath a late afternoon sky, Morgan cuts a happy arc across a playground of magic.

A playscape before her. A carousel behind her. All kinds of rides around her—each customized for people with physical and cognitive challenges like Morgan herself.

“What do you think of the park,” I asked in a meeting room before she ventured onto the grounds with her mother, Maggie.

“It’s good,” Morgan said.

“What is your favorite part?”

“The swings.”

Morgan does not offer any more detail. As her father, retired homebuilder Gordon Hartman, explained: “Morgan is a beautiful girl of a hundred smiles but sometimes limited words.”

For a teenager with first grade cognitive abilities, Morgan shows limitless potential. She stands 6-feet-4—taller than Tony Parker or George Hill of the San Antonio Spurs—and has a heart bigger than Texas.

While vacationing with her parents near Savannah, Ga. a few years ago, Morgan splashed around a hotel pool until she noticed children on the other end. Morgan waded toward the youngsters, wanting to play. The kids looked warmly at Morgan, wanting to reciprocate. But then came a familiar, paralyzing moment. Morgan wanted to make friends but couldn’t find the words. The children wanted to reach out but didn’t know how.

Gordon’s heart ached and dropped. In the sadness that washed over him, he wondered: What if there were a place designed for special needs individuals, a place where kids with various challenges and disabilities could play and have fun and connect with others?

The question lingered. His daughter’s disappointment tugged on his heart. So Gordon began looking—around Texas, throughout the U.S., across the Atlantic in Europe—but could find no special needs park in the world.

Morgan did not ask her millionaire father for a park. She didn’t have to. Morgan’s heart won him over. Once, while recovering from difficult surgery, Morgan eased visitor concerns without a word. She smiled and offered a thumbs up.

As a little girl, she struggled with physical and cognitive challenges but she did not struggle to show affection. She smiled at strangers. Hugged little children. Freely shared what she had with others. “Morgan is very social,” Maggie says. “She loves being with other kids. She understands she’s different. It makes her sad. She says, ‘I don’t want to be a different kid.’”

In some ways, Morgan is like a typical teen. She watches television, enjoys videos, plays with her dog and cat. She can be outgoing one moment, shy the next. And sometimes, her mother says, Morgan has a teenage attitude. Her challenges, though, make her stand out and inspired a dream.

Gordon left the home building business in 2005, devoted himself to philanthropy and contemplated a run for mayor. In 2008, Gordon announced he wouldn’t seek the city’s highest elected office. Why? He was going to build a park for Morgan.

“After I sold my company,” he says, “I had a chance to spend more time with Morgan. And that opened my eyes to some of the issues she deals with.”

Morgan wields more influence than most. She inspired her father to abandon political ambition and raise $30 million for a special needs oasis. That oasis, in turn, has drawn worldwide attention. People from all 50 states and 19 countries have called, e-mailed or texted inquiries about Morgan’s Wonderland. In early April, Morgan’s Wonderland had more than 12,500 Facebook fans. One month after a soft opening on March 3, nearly 9,000 people had visited—more than four times the projection.

Aniza Auguste recently visited with her granddaughter, Samantha, a 16-year-old with spina bifida. Aniza had taken Samantha to many parks but never one like Morgan’s Wonderland. “This,” she said, looking across the grounds, “is hard to believe.”

As Aniza gazed around in wonder, her eyes fell upon a sweet image on a park wall—the smiling face of a special girl who was the inspiration for this place where everyone can play.
