The small (small fiesta, that is) is below: The Big is all over when it comes to Fiesta. how to keep up with the wild crazy pace of Fiesta? Unless your gorditas are dusted with meth, it's pretty impossible - even the hotshot royals, who make most events and then some, have skilled entourages to whisk them through their Fiesta daze. One group of Fiesta royals, though, is so wild and crazy that you might think they are in a daze...and some of them probably are, come to think of it. They're the rowdy, rambunctious roisterers of fiesta Cornyation -- and no matter how unbuttoned and outlandish they get, they're raising lots of money for great SA causes. This year, the choreography of the courts seemed especially good, but the extreme costuming and the big huge float sized costumes seemed sadly reduced. After battling Battle of Flowers traffic this afternoon (another glorious parade, BTW) I'm ready to post photos of a couple more Fiesta get-togethers -- from quite small to packed-to-rafters big. On the mini side: SA's Joan and Marc Headley hosted a fabulous Fiesta bash for a few lucky friends, including Pat Turner, Richard Hoag, Virginia and Bill Van Cleave and others, all decked out in Fiesta finery. While the big public Fiesta events are the heart of the celebration, sometimes it's fun to share big doings with close friends, too.

NIOSA Night No. 1: Of Kings and Conservation

Now that the rains have dried up, Fiesta is thundering on apace, keeping die-hard fans on the run with what seems like a thousand events.

Since we're getting out May magazine to press this week (VIVA!) I've been a relative Fiesta sluggard. Not counting all the pre-Fiesta events, the past couple of days I've attended a private Fiesta brunch, Tax Assessor-Collector Sylvia Romo's employee Fiesta Float contest ... and then, last night, I got to the heart of it at NIOSA, from the food booths and music to the hottest Tuesday night Fiesta ticket in town -- the Conservation Society's annual King's Reception, held in the heart of NIOSA in the Society's historic HQ.

The party-within-the-party is a hot ticket for many reasons - the history, the VIP guests, the chance to greet King Antonio and a host of other Fiesta royals in one place -- and the FREE full bar and sumptupous food from Rosemary Kowalski's fabulous RK Group. (That bar part is big for some Fiesta fans. After the reception ended at 8 p.m., one hanger-on complained: "Do we have to go out there with the NIOSA peons to get a drink?" "You'll have to go to the Hilton unless you want beer," another advised.)

There were great folks, cool costumes and hats aplenty -- all kinds of Fiesta finery and fol-de-rol. Tonight, we're on to the Fiesta President's Reception, the Cornyation, Beethoven Mannerchor and who knows, maybe more! Unitl tomorrow, VIVA!

And we're off!

Fiesta San Antonio, our town's splashiest rollicking frolic, got off to a splashier start than usual when the spring monsoons swamped the second annual Fiesta Fiesta Thursday, turning it into the first (non-annual, knock wood) Fiesta Fiesta Flood.

Weather gods or no, Fiesta fans are nothing if not resilient.

Fiesta Commish jefe Chuck Blische, Fernando Villarreal, Anne Cannon, Patty Gonzales, Linda Skop and the unsinkable volunteers that keep the two-week S.A.palooza that's Fiesta afloat year round just regrouped, and merged the soggy Fiesta Fiesta plans with Friday's kickoff of Fiestas Fantasias at Market Square. Rain would not DARE interfere with that combination, with S.A. Parks Foundation powerhouse Lila Cockrell at the helm. San Antonio has seldom let a little water get in the way of fun, and this year's Fiesta promises to be better (not wetter) than ever.
