The Jewish Federation of San Antonio has selected Sharon Mullen to become the new Director of the Holocaust Memorial Museum. Mullen has a wealth of experience as a Bilingual educator and instructional leader. For the past 20 years, she has worked in the book publishing business. She assumed the reins from retiring director Maxine Cohen on Aug. 1.

“I am very excited about becoming the director of the museum,” Mullen said. “It is going to be a privilege and an honor to serve the community. I am committed to providing Holocaust education to schools in South Texas, and to working directly with students to help them think critically about the choices they will make as they grow and mature into responsible, caring citizens.”

Mullen’s interest in the Holocaust is in some ways personal. He father and grandparents immigrated to the United States from Austria to escape from the Nazis. Other family members were not so fortunate. They perished in Sobibor and Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Sharon, her husband Mike, and their two children moved to San Antonio in 1998. They have been involved members of Temple Beth-El for twelve years.

Mullen began her association with the museum two years ago when she participated in a docent training program. Currently, she is serving as the manager of a project the museum initiated three years ago with the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation.

“Sharon brings wonderful skills to the museum,” said Cohen. “As we became acquainted, I realized she was exactly the person we need to carry the museum’s educational work and development into the future.”

Becky Hoag, a retired teacher who has been a museum docent for several years, will be Mullen’s assistant. She is filling the position held for nine years by Virna Reposa who is also retiring.

Laura Ehrenberg, Chair of the Holocaust Commission, is enthusiastic about the museum’s future under Mullen’s leadership. “Sharon had exactly the qualifications we were looking for when we learned that after 30 years Maxine was going to retire. She has the experience as an educator, she is bilingual, and most importantly, she has the heart and soul to carry the message of the Memorial Museum.”
