Excitement is building about actress Holland Taylor’s solo show on the late Gov. Ann Richards that opens at the Charline McCombs Empire Theater Dec. 10 and runs through the 19th. Even if you don’t know Taylor by name, you’ll recognize her from long-running characters on TV shows including Two and a Half Men, the Practice and others, and many stage and movie roles.

The new issue of Scene in S.A. (with a Holiday Tamales cover) features a long interview story on Taylor’s feelings about Richards, whom she only met once, and the reason she became “obsessed” with writing a show about the colorful populist political figure who made history as Texas’ first elected female governor.

A lot of San Antonians remember Richards well – many here worked hard on her political campaigns even before she took aim at the governor’s mansion. In early December, just after Taylor arrived in town to start rehearsing the show, quite a few of them met up to share their memories at a special private reception. The place was definitely special – the Terrell Hills home of Ann’s S.A. campaign chair Pat Smothers and her husband Bud, where Richards’ first local fundraiser for that campaign was held.

Like the Smothers, many of the people greeting Taylor worked with Richards’ campaign from the beginning. Jane Macon, Ginger Purdy, Janice Ricks, Jo McCall and Billie Wilson were among those who reminisced about the campaign. Former Mayor Lila Cockrell, Lukin Gilliland, Carolyn Petersen, Therese McDevitt, Yvonne Katz and R. Jo Reser shared stories with guests too young to remember Richards well. And Ave Bonar, Richards’ long-time friend and her campaign photographer who’s now a friend and fan of Taylor, snapped photos all evening long. (Much better than my photos, I’m sorry to say.)

Taylor greeted every guest as they arrived under the vintage “Ann Richards for Governor” banner in the Smothers’ foyer. Then she talked a little about the show, and what made her so passionate about writing and performing it. When Purdy presented her one of the fans with Ann’s face that were passed out at Richards’ Austin funeral, Taylor knew the quotation from Richards that’s printed on the back of the fan. But she had never seen the poster that Purdy gave her – a drawing of the Statue of Liberty featuring Richards’ face and the simple slogan “It’s Our Turn.”
