STOP Playing Safe New program emphasizes injury awareness and prevention in youth sports by Tracy Austin, M.D. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, participation in organized sports is on the rise. Comprehensive efforts like First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign and organizations like the Kids Sports Network in San Antonio, which acts as a clearinghouse for sports information, further promote physical activity. Nearly 30 million children and adolescents participate in youth sports in the United States—statistics that should be cause for celebration. But it is possible to have too much of a good thing where youth sports are concerned? It appears that there is a flip side. When getting youth involved in sports, parents and even coaches are rarely educated about or even aware of a growing epidemic of preventable sports injuries adversely affecting young athletes. The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation estimates that three to five million young athletes go to emergency rooms for sports injuries each year, and their family doctors may see another eight million. There is also an alarming trend in "professional-level" orthopedic injuries among youth sports participants. Injuries such as labaral tears and ligament damage that were once seen only in elite adult athletes (like baseball great Alex Rodriguez, who recently underwent surgery to repair a labaral tear) are now showing up in the under-18 set, the result of demanding the body to increase speed or performance much too quickly. And when looking at sports with the highest rates of injury, it’s clear that it’s not just football players and gymnasts who are at risk—almost every type of youth sport from baseball to dancing to swimming is contributing to the rise in the number of youth sitting in doctors’ waiting rooms with sport-related injuries. Obviously, the solution is not to discourage sports participation. Physicians continually advise parents to get their children more involved in any activity to help them stay physically fit and healthy. More than a third of U.S. adults are obese, and unfortunately, for the past few years, the city of San Antonio has continually ranked among the “fattest” cities in America. The factors that contribute to the high rates of obese and overweight children and adults in San Antonio are the same factors contributing to the obesity epidemic nationwide— lack of exercise. Of course, playing sports certainly promotes fitness. Athletics can help boost kids’ self confidence, foster social skills and even enable young, talented athletes to pursue their dreams on a professional level. But there needs to be more of an emphasis on injury awareness and prevention. To get the word out, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and its collaborators created the STOP Sports Injuries Campaign, designed to “keep kids in the game for life.” In addition, STOP’s Council of Champions includes business, sports and medical leaders who will actively engage parents, coaches, young athletes and healthcare providers in sports injury prevention. The STOP Sports Injuries Campaign’s easy-to-navigate website, www.stopsportsinjuries.org, provides specific helpful tips about staying safe while playing sports, as well as information about the latest advances in sports and orthopedics. The San Antonio Orthopedic Group—a multi-specialty practice of 24 physicians who are among local advocates of the STOP Sports Injuries Campaign, treat a multitude of injuries and athletes. Dr. Brad Tolin, a sports medicine specialist with the group, says overuse is one of the prime culprits in many of the sports injuries he sees. Overuse injuries generally include tissue or bone damage caused by repetitive strain over the course of time. Tolin stresses that sports-related overuse injuries have become increasingly common here in because youths are playing at ever-younger ages, practicing for longer amounts of time and training, in some cases, year-round. The stakes are also higher than ever for younger competitive sports players, causing many to mask pain or problems to avoid missing practice. “The old adage of ‘no pain, no gain’ is definitely not advisable,” Tolin says. Pain is a sign that something is wrong, and should always be checked out. A student athlete’s small injury, neglected today, can snowball into a chronic problem that lasts a lifetime. |
